چکیده

Interferometry has long been used in radio astronomy to enable imaging of astronomical sources with angular resolutions exceeding the diffraction limit of a single aperture. In the past decade, interferometry of the CMB has been carried out with instruments such as the CBI, DASI and VSA which exploited the inherent instrumental stability and simplicity of ell-space analysis of interferometer data. The practice of interferometric polarimetry has been particularly well-developed in the radio astronomical community and DASI and CBI were able to measure the polarization of the CMB over the multipole range 200 < ‘ < 1500. In this talk, I discuss the theory of interferometry and the mathematics of CMB interferometric polarimetry, using the recent polarization observations of the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) as an example. Topics will also include description of the data pipeline, handling of contaminating signals and sources, and the construction of optimal maps. I will conclude with the possibility of future CMB interferometers with kilo-element arrays and mega-

LIMITS ON THE POLARIZATION OF THE COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND RADIATION AT MULTIPOLES UP TO l 2000

We report upper limits on the polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) as measured with the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI), a 13 element interferometer that operates in the 26–36 GHz band and is sited on Llano de Chajnantor in northern Chile. The array consists of 90 cm Cassegrain antennas mounted on a steerable platform that can be rotated about the optical axis to faci...

MAXIPOL’s Half Wave Plate Polarimetry

MAXIPOL was the first experiment to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background with a rotating half wave plate. We discuss the magnitude and sources for instrumental polarization and polarization rotation in the instrument.

Efficient Decomposition of Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization Maps into Pure E, Pure B, and Ambiguous Components

Separation of the B component of a cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization map from the much larger E component is an essential step in CMB polarimetry. For a map with incomplete sky coverage, this separation is necessarily hampered by the presence of ambiguous modes which could be either E or B modes. I present an efficient pixel-space algorithm for removing the ambiguous modes and sepa...

CMB Polarimetry using Correlation Receivers with the PIQUE and CAPMAP Experiments

The Princeton IQU Experiment (PIQUE) and the Cosmic Anisotropy Polarization MAPper (CAPMAP) are experiments designed to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) on sub-degree scales in an area within 1◦ of the North Celestial Pole using heterodyne correlation polarimeters and off-axis telescopes located in central New Jersey. PIQUE produced the tightest limit on the CMB...
